Spelling
We will be using Words Their Way to teach phonics/spelling this year. Your child will be expected to practice sorting and spelling the words at home. We will have a test each Friday. The test will cover some of the spelling words and one or two new words they haven't practiced that follow the same spelling pattern that was practiced that week.

Here are some ways your child can practice at home:
- Do an open sort of the spelling words (sort them into whatever category makes sense)
- Do a closed sort with the spelling words (sort according to set consonant/vowel patterns).
- Build a Scrabble board using spelling words.
- Play Tic Tac Toe, but use spelling words in the boxes instead of X’s and O’x. You have to spell them correctly to win the box.
- Practice writing spelling words in the boxes on graph paper.
- Write your spelling words from shortest to longest.
- Illustrate, color, and label your spelling words. Be sure to demonstrate the meaning of the word with your drawing.
- Write a poem, story, or song using at least 10 of your words.
- Write a sentence with each word. Make sure you show meaning for each word.
- Find 3 synonyms or antonyms for each word on your list.
- Make a word search on graph paper by hiding your words within other letters.
- Write your spelling words in ABC order.
